Interpreting
Read about different types of interpreting services as well as our workshops and information sessions about deaf culture…
ASL-English We provide Sign language-English interpreting that reflects the range of language use in the Deaf community from ASL to more English-based types of signing.
Deaf-Blind This type of interpreting is used by individuals who are deaf and have varying degrees of vision loss. In addition to the content of the communication, interpreters also convey environmental information.
- Tactile Interpreting: This type of interpreting involves the deaf-blind person placing their hands on the interpreter’s hands to take in the message.
- Close Vision: Depending on individual needs, this type of interpreting requires interpreters to sit within close proximity of the consumer and/or restrict their sign space.
Sign or Text to ASL These services are often rendered by interpreters who are deaf themselves. It includes deaf-blind interpreting when the source language is ASL or another form of sign. Deaf interpreters generally have native or native-like command of ASL, as well as in-depth cultural knowledge that can make them more effective than a hearing interpreter in instances such as court cases or when another deaf individual’s signing goes beyond the fluency level of even highly qualified hearing interpreters. (The RID has a standard practice paper that gives a thorough description of the use of Certified Deaf Interpreters at http://www.rid.org/UserFiles/File/pdfs/120.pdf
Seminars on Deaf Culture
While our business aim is provide equal access to communication and information, we recognize that successful interactions are not influenced by language alone.
We must emphasize that one cannot learn about any entire culture in one hour, one day, or even a week; Deaf Studies is an entire field of academia on an international scale. Nevertheless, it is worthwhile to have discussions about what it means to be a deaf person in a hearing environment.
Seminars point out aspects of deaf culture that may differ from hearing expectations. Practical strategies will be offered for how to make interactions between deaf and hearing people as effective as possible.
Sessions are tailored to suit each organization’s needs. Please contact us to discuss what type of seminar would be best for you.
