Deaf Interpreting Services

Deaf interpreting (DI) service are provided by skilled interpreters who are Deaf themselves. Deaf interpreters generally have native or native-like command of ASL, as well as in-depth cultural knowledge that can make them more effective than a hearing interpreter in instances such as court cases or when another Deaf or Hard of Hearing individual’s signing goes beyond the fluency level of even highly qualified hearing interpreters.

DI services are often requested to work with the following consumers:

  • People who are Deaf-Blind
  • Deaf people with developmental disabilities
  • Deaf people who use international sign languages
  • Hearing people who need additional support to communicate with Deaf individuals more effectively

DI services are also commonly used in, but not limited to, the following settings:

  • Mirroring
  • Platform Interpreting
  • Sight Translation

With Deaf-Blind interpreting services, we give attention to clients who need tactile and/or close vision interpretation. Deaf-Blind interpreting involves the transliteration of sign language into a tactile or compact form needed by the individual requiring this service.

The Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf has a standard practice paper that gives a thorough description of the use of Certified Deaf Interpreters at http://www.rid.org/UserFiles/File/pdfs/120.pdf.
